About Me

Welcome to Healthy-bedroom-ideas.com!

I wanted to start a site to share bedroom ideas from a health perspective. As a registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science degree, I have worked in the healthcare field for over 25 years.

For several years, I have worked with medically fragile babies and children suffering from a variety of respiratory and other long-term illnesses. I have also been an assistant clinical instructor in Community Health Nursing at my former University.

I'm greatly interested in disease and illness prevention. There is much information I have gleaned over the past several years that I look forward to sharing with you. The home environment plays a crucial role in our health. My hope is that you too can benefit from sleeping in a healthy bedroom.

After learning about and experiencing conventional medical treatments and methods, I have been impressed by the findings and successes found within Environmental medicine.

There is a large body of scientific evidence and extensive research to support the methods and conclusions found within this little known, yet growing specialty of medicine.

Many researchers are convinced that the greatest threat to our health in this generation will be from chemicals.

Dr. Jaumann, a German research physician has stated, "There is more and more proof that there is no safe level of many chemicals and toxic substances. The delicacy and complexity of our nervous system and the brain, and the information transported by the molecules and neurohormones, makes our nervous system and brain most vulnerable to changes in the chemical environment.

Many doctors are not aware of this upcoming challenge. Intensive education is needed as many neurotoxic diseases are 'mislabeled' today. Public healthcare has to understand that only prevention of pollution will pay."

More and more chemical combinations are being created and used every day. From our foods, to body washes, lotions, deodorants, various creams, clothing, bedding, cleaning products, environments, our car, our homes, the list goes on and on.

Sadly, many of these chemicals are used or placed in products without adequate testing or knowledge of what the effects upon humans will be. Some chemical effects are not noticed right away. Often, many do unseen damage to organs or important functions within the body. In some cases these may take years to develop, or years before symptoms are noticed.

After relying on conventional medicine to treat my lifelong, year-round allergies and worsening health problems, I was treated with more and more medications. My health continued to decline and I began a desperate search for answers. With the approach used by Environmental physicians, I was able to look for the CAUSES then the cures for my many symptoms and illnesses.

Environmental medicine looks at all the possible things that might be causing a person to have unexplained symptoms or illnesses, or diseases. They are also some of the only doctors who are able to successfully treat toxic, life-threatening chemical exposures. They are able to greatly help those who suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities(M.C.S.) and/or Environmental Illness (E.I.).

Because Environmental Medicine is it’s own little niche, and not well known, many well-meaning doctors are skeptical. But many, after examining the evidence and extensive research become convinced that this is truly the only way to go to provide genuine help. It often leads to permanent cures for the patient. Little bits of information are trickling down into mainstream medicine slowly as some doctors strive to help their patients find cures and not just cover up symptoms with medications.

Environmental medicine is not simply about being “green”, although many times this approach is better for the environment. But sometimes what seems good for the environment, may not be best for humans.

The environmental approach to treating and helping individuals includes looking at all the things in your home, all the chemicals or gases you might be exposed to inside and out, your diet, nutrient deficiencies, food allergies, environmental allergies, etc. It may sound overwhelming, and it is, if you try to do it all at once. But if you take things a step at a time, and especially when you start to notice improvements, it’s very do-able and so worth the effort.

In the beginning, one of the first things I tackled was my bedroom. I learned that it needs to be the one room that is an oasis. It needs to be a place where you can be free of the many things you might be sensitive to, and where your body can truly recover and rest. My desire is to help you make it a room that doesn’t hinder your health, but rather promotes it. This is equally and probably even more important for children and babies.

I also come from a family of builders so I’m familiar with many aspects of home construction. That’s why you’ll find many suggestions relating to home construction or remodeling ideas as they pertain to bedrooms. My husband and I designed our own home and tried to make it as chemical-free as we could. Out of these experiences came the concept for healthy-bedroom-ideas.com.

We are learning so much more about the seemingly common chemicals and gases around us every day and their harmful effects. Our generation is bombarded with more chemicals than previous generations. Toxic effects or reactions can occur suddenly, but many develop slowly. Often, the effects are unnoticeable or seemingly mild until a lot of time has passed. Sadly for many, after a lot of time, or exposure, it can be too late to do much about it. Some effects are permanent and irreversible.

Many individuals unknowingly have sensitivities which cause a multitude of symptoms, and later can cause serious physiologic and psychiatric illnesses. Many of these illnesses can be quite debilitating.

There is an increase in Multiple Chemical Sensitivities or Environmental Illness (E.I.) these days. This is why it’s important to recognize and address these symptoms early to avoid the development of more serious complications later as the body becomes more and more overloaded. Our bodies can only detoxify so much, and it must be healthy in order to detoxify efficiently. Detoxification is a very complex process, dependent upon many factors both inside and outside the body.

Some individuals after chemical exposures, find it very difficult to regain their health or former way of life once extensive damage within the body has occurred. And many, including their doctors, don’t even know or recognize what caused their problems in the first place.

Unfortunately we cannot rely on the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) or the government to protect us from everything. Many times they have let us down by not supplying the complete information needed on medical treatments and drugs. Often they have let monetary interests prevail against what the public needs to know. There are several well-documented cases where this has occurred.

We’re all bio-chemically unique, so what might bother one person severely, can cause little problem or no problem at all for another. Or two people can have the same sensitivity yet manifest if very differently. For example, a certain fragrance may cause one person to get a headache, and another might get weepy, burning eyes. Yet upon testing, both might be sensitive to the very same chemical.

Anyway, I want to encourage you to consider the information presented here. Check it out with other reliable sources (especially within Environmental Medicine and research).

Decide for yourself what might be most beneficial to you. Then, based upon that knowledge, do whatever you’re able to do.

At least you'll have more information than the average consumer to know what's in the products you buy. And it won't be so easy to persuade you to buy unsafe items despite the slick advertising.

Finally, I’m happy to report that I’m far healthier now, 10 years later, and rarely take medications. I used to take several medications daily, including asthma inhalers. I was exhausted most of the time. I had to wear a mask when cleaning or when outside. I’ve not had to do those things for over 7 years. I’ve done many things to promote my health and am living proof that making environmental changes really works.

So start with your bedroom and healthy-bedroom-ideas.com. There are loads of ideas here to make your bedroom and the things in it as healthful as you can. By making it a healthy room, you will reap the many benefits of sleeping in a clean, chemical-free room.
