Basement Bedroom

Your basement bedroom can be made healthy.

A basement bedroom is often an option or a preferred area for sleeping. However, if you’re allergic, asthmatic or suspect chemical sensitivities is best to avoid this area for a bedroom if possible.

Basements, because they are underground, have more moisture issues due to the dampness in the ground. One way to help with this is to have a de-humidifier that can help with removing excess moisture from the room.

Most basements contain extensive amounts of concrete since it’s part of the supporting foundation of the home. The concrete should have a safe sealant applied over it for any areas that would be exposed to the inside, primarily to prevent outgassing of formaldehyde, which is found in significant amounts in concrete.

A good ventilation system is important in a basement to help prevent molds, mildew and outgassing of chemicals. A high efficiency heating and venting system can help. Monitor windows for molds and mildew. Keep these free of build-up with regular cleaning using non-toxic cleaning methods.

Next, check for radon gas. This is often found in basements and causes lung cancer.

It is most commonly found in the mid-western United States, but there have been reports of it throughout the country. It is worth getting this checked due to the adverse consequences it causes if undetected.

Check list for a healthier basement bedroom:

*Keep moisture out as much as possible. Use a dehumidifier. Keep humidity around 50%. Levels higher than that encourage mold, mildew and dust mite growth. Humidity below 30% can be too drying. Purchase a humidity gauge so you can monitor this and adjust accordingly.

*Seal any exposed concrete. Make sure any insulation is not exposed. It should be covered and sealed especially if fiberglass insulation is used as tiny particles float in the air. These tiny glass-like pieces when inhaled cause damage to the lungs. With significant exposure, it’s much like asbestos exposure which causes irreversible lung damage.

*Provide adequate ventilation and air circulation.

*Check for radon levels.

*Carefully choose non-toxic carpets, rugs, or flooring as well as safe cleaning products.

*Use low or no VOC (volatile organic compound) paints. These contain lower levels or no levels of harmful carcinogenic fumes which can outgas for weeks to months.

*Check also for and safely eliminate any pest problems.
