Bedroom Paint
How to Choose the Healthiest Paints
Want to make your bedroom clean and "green"?
Which types of paint are healthiest and will still do the job?
BEST BEDROOM PAINT: The healthiest types of paints are natural or non-toxic paints. These are usually made of plant dyes, clays, resins, essential oils, soy or milk proteins. They don't contain ANY VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds which off-gas harmful chemicals) or hazardous products. This makes them the safest type of bedroom paint to use. These are also best for pregnant women, children, pets and those with chemical sensitivities or weakened immune systems.
VOC's typically contain ketones, formaldehyde, methane and polyurethane. Paints containing VOC's can emit these and other gases for over a year. VOC's have been associated with cancers, mental disorders, respiratory problems and causing harm to unborn babies. Non-toxic primers and sealers are also available. These types of products generally cost more, but if you're trying to create a less toxic environment, it's well worth the additional expense for it may save you a lot in costly medical bills later. Look for products with the Green Seal Certification when possible. These products have been researched and approved by a non-profit organization that endorses environmentally safe products. They have stringent standards for environmental safety of the products they endorse including paint and many building supplies. Other Advantages to using non-toxic bedroom paint: Most perform as well as regular paints with little or no odors. If any odors are present, they are usually pleasant and from natural oils. These types of paints are ideal for people with health problems.
Not considered hazardous waste, so cans can be discarded in regular trash.
SECOND BEST BEDROOM PAINT choices:
Zero or low VOC paints are the next best choice. While they both contain VOC's, there are less of them. According to the E.P.A. (Environmental Protective Agency) paints that contain 50 grams or less VOC's per gallon qualify as a "Zero" VOC paint.
There is no standard for "Low-VOC" paint, but usually is less that 500 grams per gallon. If colors or tints are added, keep in mind that can increase the VOC content up to four times their original amount. The EPA also only regulates paints that contain toxic ingredients--not non-toxic or natural paints.
Advantages:
Most have little to no odors and they are much safer than conventional interior paints. Safer for the painter as well as the person who will be using the bedroom. Many of these clean up easily with water or natural type cleaners. Most standard paints are the most harmful during the paint application process and while curing-which usually takes about a month. This is the best time to avoid using the room until it has aired out at least a month or two. Once cured, these types of paints usually do not significantly add to poor indoor air quality.
Carpets
,new furniture,
flooring
and vinyl shower curtains add many more chemicals to rooms and are of greater concern than paints, in the grand scheme of things.
