Bedroom Colour Schemes

Bedroom Colour Schemes can create a variety of moods and feelings-everything from a restful, tranquil environment, to one that is loud and stimulating.

Numerous studies point to how critical a good night’s sleep is to your health and immune system, so creating an environment that is conducive to good sleep, makes sense.

Bedroom colours will affect how restful and inviting the room is for you.

While many colors have typical effects on most people, all of us are affected differently. Just as music stimulates different parts of the brain in unique ways, colors do the same.

Interestingly, on brain scans, areas literally “light up” when we see or hear things we really like. There's little or no “lighting up” when we see or hear things we don’t like or have no interest in.

Since we’re all “wired” differently, a color that is restful to one may not be so to another. Age, gender, culture, and where you live also affect color preferences. Given these facts, the best thing is to choose a bedroom colour scheme that is restful or desirable to you.

You may already be quite aware of your own color preferences, but if not, take a look at your color options and some of the bedroom colour scheme photos below and take note of how they make you feel. There are bound to be some colors that will really excite you or create a pleasurable feeling when you look at them.

And maybe you'll get some inspiration for creating a colorful AND healthy bedroom!

Here are some bedroom color schemes that typically affect people in the following ways:

Oranges and Reds:

These are usually stimulating for most people. The colors can actually increase blood circulation and can create an energetic feel to a room. Darker red shades can evoke passion. For bedrooms, use of red can be kept to accent pillows or bedroom drapes or as a contrast to neutral shades such as cream, white or grays. These add a nice splash of color without overwhelming you with stimulation.

Blues and Greens:

Many people find blues and greens restful, and they are still very popular color schemes for bedrooms. There are many different shades available for these colors. Sage and olive greens are quite popular when painting a bedroom. Lavender can be a better choice than blues for people prone to depression. It’s considered to be a comforting and supportive color often recommended by color therapy practitioners.

Yellows:

This color catches most peoples attention. (Think of road signs…!) Very light shades of yellow can be a good color choice for bedrooms, and especially for men. It also creates a spacious feeling and can make small rooms look larger. Yellow often adds a cheerful touch or feeling to the room.

Purples:

This is said to stimulate the “creative side within”. It’s often a bold choice and has long been used and popular with royalty since ancient times. A contrast of purple and gray can be a nice combination depending on how light or dark you go. These colors can create a bold, modern look, or make a calm and cool environment.

Pastels:

These are just softened versions of the primary and secondary colors mentioned above, such as pink, peach, pale green, etc. These can add a softer touch to the room often making it seem more restful.

Black or White:

Use of one or the other of these colors makes a bold statement for a bedroom.White tends to create a pure, clean, restful look. Black is bolder and evokes power, passion and stimulation. A combination of black and white is often a choice for modern bedroom designs and there are many ways to use these combinations to create the look and feel you want.

Silver/Golds:

These can add a regal, sleek or modern touch to a room. Silver is usually a cooler color. It can often be more stimulating if shiny or bright silver is used. Golds typically create a warmer feel and can make the room look very regal or classy. Either color can be bright or toned down, which can give you a lot of decorating options.

Neutral Shades:

Ivory, gray or beige are a few examples of colors you can use as a base, especially if you’re not sure about which colors to use in your bedroom. They are fresh and subtle. Other brighter colors can easily be added to perk up the room. Neutral bedroom colour schemes can give you more options for changing things later too.

Remember all colors have an effect on your mood whether you are aware of it or not. Create a room with colors that will foster the feelings you want most when you’re in your bedroom!
