IDEAS AND TIPS to keep you at your healthiest…

When selecting bedroom flooring, the healthiest choices in order of importance are:

1. wood

2. tile

3. vinyl

4. carpeting

WOOD:

My personal favorite for flooring in the bedroom is wood. It is also the healthiest option if you choose the right wood and finish. The above photo is from my bedroom. I’ve had it in my room for 7 years and it’s been great.

I absolutely love it for many reasons!

If your home is adequately heated, it’s very comfortable to walk on, and doesn’t feel cold on bare feet. It looks beautiful and most of all it is very clean, ( providing I keep up on my housework! )

Some people balk at the idea of having anything other than carpeting for their bedroom flooring, thinking it’s just not very cozy or comfortable ( I used to feel that way). But I have loved having a wood floor in my room. Knowing it’s a much healthier choice, and it keeps the room so much cleaner, as well as keeping my allergy symptoms under control, makes it all the better.

Bamboo is also a good alternative and is quite durable. Cork is another healthy option, but may not create the most attractive appearance. It is a bit “spongy” to walk on. It also has some moisture and humidity issues one must consider before choosing this alternative.

The advantages of wood flooring are that you can select finishes that are natural, and sealants which can prevent or greatly reduce chemical outgassing (while you’re at it, put some safe wood outgassing sealant on any wooden doors or trim you may have in the bedroom as well).

Wood floors can also be kept as clean as you like, as the dust and dirt are easy to see.

The bedroom floors can also be made quite cozy with fluffy natural fiber rugs in specific areas. Wool or organic cotton rugs are also a good choice to add if you like the idea of having some kind of floor covering. These can also be washed or cleaned frequently to keep the room clean.

Disadvantages of wood flooring are that if you do not choose the finish carefully, you may end up with a lot of unwanted chemical exposures which last for several months to years. Wood can also be quite slippery, and if placed around a master bathroom, it is vulnerable to water or liquid damage if there is some kind of leakage.

Wood floors will likely need refinishing at some point, but depending on traffic in the room, may not need it for several years. It’s also important to choose a durable, strong wood if you want it to last and to avoid scratches.

Pine is a very soft wood, so is not a good choice for floors unless you just love that look. Some sensitive individuals have problems with pine as well, as it is an odorous wood. The wood floor in our bedroom still looks great. Ours is called Select Red Birch, and is a light medium, warm color. It is very scratch-resistant, durable, and beautiful!

Next, you might want to know about the chemicals or heavy metals to consider if choosing tile or vinyl and especially carpets for your bedroom flooring.
