DESIGN YOUR OWN HEALTHY BEDROOM

Would you love to design your own bedroom? While you’re at it, why not make it as healthy as you can?

Many studies show that most homes have the highest levels of pollutants and chemicals in them compared to many other buildings. Even the outside air as polluted as it may be, in most cases, is far healthier than what is found in many homes, according to the E.P.A. (Environmental Protection Agency).

You have lots of control over what you choose to put in your bedroom. It can be a lot of fun to come up with bedroom ideas that suit your own taste, but are healthy as well. Remember,if you want a healthy bedroom, you want to create an oasis, not a toxic room.

Here’s where you can begin: What makes a bedroom healthy?

In a nutshell, keeping as many pollutants and toxic chemicals out as possible. Many common products and materials outgas harmful chemicals. For those who may not be familiar with this term (or offgassing), it simply means the chemicals contained within various products and substances release gases which disperse throughout the area.

Many of the gases released enter our bodies through the skin (our largest organ), the nose, lungs, and bloodstream.

Our brains have a protective barrier called the blood brain barrier. This prevents the entry of many toxins within the brain via the bloodstream. Many of the chemicals released from synthetic products are able to bypass this blood brain barrier thereby causing direct injury to our brain and body.

Limiting these exposures is critical to good health, and to minimize the development of many diseases including cancer. As you design your own bedroom, you can take these factors into account and decide which chemicals you want to live without!

Many chemicals cause many illnesses

Chemicals are unavoidable in this day and age and some might ask, “why bother? It’s just too much.” But when your total load of exposures is reduced, it has a significant impact upon your health. By combining it with other healthful lifestyle choices, you can enjoy many years of good health. You can avoid many of the illnesses that have increased steadily over the years from exposures to many substances.

The many who research products and chemicals will tell you that with increased exposures to harmful chemicals, increases in toxic reactions, rates of illness, and cancers occur as well.

The problem is that some illnesses don’t show up for many years, and so it’s sometimes hard to make the connection. However numerous studies have shown repeatedly that many chemicals very often cause immediate and long-term health problems.

There have been amazing increases in all kinds of illnesses and health problems over the past several decades as our world has been bombarded with more and more toxins. Many of these illnesses are showing up earlier and in greater numbers than ever before, especially serious illnesses like autism, asthma, GI problems, and cancers. More and more babies and children are showing up with serious health problems as well, that once were rare or unheard of in these age groups.

Here you will find out about many of those chemicals and how they're lurking in so many of the things we use every day. More importantly, you will also learn about WHY they are so harmful and about safer, alternative products or methods.

TOP THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU WANT TO DESIGN YOUR OWN HEALTHY BEDROOM:

1. Keep it simple-less is better. There will be less chemicals to be exposed to, and less to clean. In other words, don’t cram the room full of furniture, pillows, etc. Avoid indoor and outdoor air pollution as much as you can.

2. Decide how you want the room arranged-if starting from scratch, you can make healthy decisions about bedroom walls, insulation, and bedroom paint.

You can then decide on how you want the bed positioned, window placement, bathroom and closet placement, as well as any furnishings. Maybe you'd like a little help with a bedroom furniture plan. As you design your bedroom, these choices all have an impact on your health and quality of sleep.

3. Decide ahead of time upon a bedroom theme, bedroom decor and paint. Do you want a soft, romantic bedroom or perhaps something very modern? Making these decisions ahead of time will help as you choose items for the room, and you won’t be pulled in so many different directions from the myriad of choices and colors available!

4. If you are building or remodeling a bedroom, look for a builder who is willing to work with you in choosing healthy materials. Some builders will try to talk you out of the choices you want. They sometimes prefer products they normally use or are familiar with using. Remember you are the one paying for the work and products, and you will be the one living in that room for a long time, benefiting from the wise and healthy choices you made.

Home Inspections-a Good Idea

If you are planning to build or remodel and you want to determine the condition and types of materials used, and if there are mold or pest issues or other health concerns, then consider having a home inspection done.

Most people do it routinely before purchasing a home. This will most likely save you a lot of money down the road. It will prevent many headaches by knowing the condition of things before you buy or build.

If you live in the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia area in Washington state, consider having a home inspection done by a reputable company such as Trek Inspection Services, Inc. I've known Bob personally for many years and can highly recommend him and his great service.
