Kids Bedroom Ideas
Ideas for making kids rooms cute, fun AND most importantly, HEALTHY!
The best kids bedroom ideas use creative and unique décor, but the best rooms are also made healthy. To make a healthy room, use as many organic or natural materials as possible.
Kids are now exposed to more chemicals on a daily basis than ever before, so if you reduce additional exposures in their bedrooms at night, this will be a great help to their young, developing bodies. Because so much time is spent in this room, making it as chemical-free as possible will provide many health benefits. Chemicals have an effect on everyone, whether you’re aware of the exposures or not. Numerous chemicals are found in many items in a bedroom.
Mattresses,
carpets,
bedding
and furniture are significant contributors to indoor air pollution. These items typically offgas many chemicals that are now known to be harmful, and some are carcinogenic. So… for kids bedrooms, pick organic or natural materials whenever possible to PREVENT health problems. And most importantly, make the room inviting and cute (or cool as the case may be…!) Read on for ideas on how to do that:
BEDROOM PAINTS:
Paints are a fun way to create a unique room for a child. The important consideration here from a health standpoint is to use non-toxic, low or no-VOC paints and primers. This will greatly reduce or eliminate any harmful chemical off-gassing that occurs especially during paint application, and can continue for several weeks to months afterwards. Using stencils with paint can create many unique patterns on the bedroom walls or can be used as borders. Painted decor is usually more healthful than wallpapers because no harmful glues or pastes are used. Molds and mildews can also build up over time with wallpaper, especially if there are humidity issues in the room. I’ve seen some recommend using some kind of room freshener (plug-ins or sprays) in the room to cover up the odor from standard paints. Know that that’s all they will do-cover up the odors- they do nothing to remove the harmful chemicals in the room, in fact they will add to them! Just use non-toxic paints whenever possible and you won't have to worry about bad effects from chemicals. Here are some KIDS BEDROOM IDEAS to get you started…
FOR GIRLS ROOMS:One idea is to use pink or green colors as shown above or have a princess theme, which is quite popular right now. Using sheer curtains give the room a light, airy, dreamy look. Glitter paints can also be used as accents.
One of the cutest rooms I’ve seen had a white picket fence painted on the walls of the room, decorated with trailing flowers and butterflies. It felt like a touch of Spring to walk into that room! It’s also cute to use a real picket fence as a headboard to a bed. It adds a unique touch of realism using actual fencing. For a kid who’s artistically inclined, you could put up a clothesline type string in the room and clip on drawings or paintings done by your child to showcase them. Artwork can then be changed or added on as part of the bedroom décor. Pink dots and plaids are fun combinations and add interest to the bedroom.

Or some girls like a classy looking room with silky-looking materials as shown in the lavender photo below:
BEDROOM IDEAS FOR BOYS ROOMS: Painting forest or jungle themes complete with twisty trees and wild animals…or dinosaurs!
Painting Cartoon characters such as Sponge Bob, Tom & Jerry, Phineas & Ferb. One cute kids bedroom idea is to have a backyard type scene painted on the wall, then a real doghouse placed in the corner where a favorite stuffed dog can be kept. Ocean or beach scenes make for a restful-looking room. Add dolphins, whales or fish. Another kids bedroom idea is to paint a race track on the wall and place small cars on or near it. Or set up a small table that can accommodate a race track or train set in the room. Not only will it add to the décor of the room, it will keep the kids entertained and provide a fun place to hang out. Boys and girls often enjoy tents or camps in their rooms. Adding trees or creating a tropical beach scene can be painted on the walls. Tents or camps provide “hiding spots” or seclusion that most kids seem to love. These can sometimes be added on top of the beds, or simply set up somewhere in the room if the room is large enough. A sleeping bag left or placed in the tent makes for a fun alternative place to sleep sometimes, or when having a friend over to spend the night. Modern block-type furniture as shown in the photo below provide a clean and functional area for sleep and for play.
Using real plants in the room for older children is a healthful and decorative option. Many plants are very good at detoxifying chemicals in the room. Just make sure the plant is not harmful to children who might decide to try a bite!

CHOOSE ORGANIC BEDDING:
Unfortunately, many decorative sheets and pillowcases for kids bedrooms are not organic, but there are more choices becoming available as the demand for these types of products increases. If you opt for white or basic colors for truly organic bedding, the room can still be decorated with objects and paint that will brighten the room and make it an inviting place for play or sleep. It’s important to know the processing of organic materials purchased, such as SHEETS, PILLOWS and mattresses. If items state “certified organic” they should be safe and free of all toxins. If the product simply says “organic”, it may not be free of toxic chemicals. That is because the main material used (such as cotton), is organic, but it may have been bleached, dyed or finished with toxic, harmful chemicals. It simply means that the main product may be organic, but says nothing of anything else that could have been used or added that is not organic or healthful. Unless the manufacturer states how the product was produced from start to finish, you may not be getting a product that is pure and genuinely organic. It’s worthwhile to check out the sources when trying to buy organic items for your kids bedroom. Reputable companies are happy and proud to provide consumers with that information.
