Teenage Girls Bedrooms

Teenage Girls Bedrooms can be fun, inviting and HEALTHY. They can be made healthy with a little planning and info about how to keep the toxins and excess chemicals out.

Teenage girls bedrooms can be made healthy by using the following:

certified organic cotton sheets,

organic comforters and pillows,

organic mattresses and pads.

Click on the above links for more details about why these are much healthier choices than standard bedding.

If you’re creative and like to sew, organic sheets or fabrics can be purchased and used for drapes.

These are a healthier option since many fabrics, window shades or blinds outgas harmful chemicals including formaldehyde. Some outgassing increases when the fabrics are heated by sunlight penetrating them during daylight hours.

Other important options include healthy bedroom carpets such as wool or natural fibers, or non-chemically treated carpeting. Wood floors with natural and/or washable rugs are good choices. Remember most indoor carpets are the primary source for emitting the most toxic gases into a room. This occurs for long periods of time, and even after odors are no longer detected by our noses!

Paints that are non-toxic are best for bedrooms, but no or low VOC’s (volatile organic compounds [toxic gases]) will make for a healthier room compared to using standard paints.

Bedroom furniture which doesn’t contain plywood or particle board will make for a healthy bedroom. Check for the type of finish used on the furniture. Also, by avoiding plastic furniture, one can avoid other harmful chemicals such as BPH and styrene which are known to cause harm on the cellular level, including cancers.

Many teenage girls like to have stuffed animals or large decorative pillows in their bedrooms. If one is prone to allergies or chemical sensitivities it’s best to avoid these or at least remove them from the bed when sleeping at night. They harbor dust mites over time, and the synthetic materials can outgas chemicals that should be avoided.

Storage should be done using natural wood or fabric whenever possible for a healthier teen bedroom. Keeping shoes out of the room is also helpful in preventing outgassing of many harmful chemicals found in most shoes.
